Studying
IT in
Australia
Whether
you are looking for companies with solutions to your Information Technology
Telecommunication problems, a base in the Asia Pacific region, new products,
opportunities for collaboration or a quality university in IT&T
- Australia has the answer.
The
information age has created enormous benefits and opportunities for
the world's information industries. Supported by an advanced domestic
telecommunications infrastructure, highly competitive regulatory regimes,
and extensive network of high technology research and developed institutions
and state-of-the-art University IT&T courses, Australian firms are
well placed to service new markets beyond our shores, as well as traditional
domestic markets.
Technology take-up
is very high - in most cases second only to the USA. The Sydney 2000
Olympics will capitalise on this global leadership by combining the
latest technology with tradition dating back thousands of years. To
facilitate problem-free Games that meet the needs of stakeholders, Sports,
the Olympic Family, Broadcasters, Media, Sponsors, and the Public, SOGOC
will provide systems, infrastructure and technology to successfully
operate the Games. The scope of the Technology operations is enormous,
as the amount of equipment used to support the Games includes a 6,000
PC network, 15,000 telephone lines and more than two million metres
of cabling, as well as systems to provide delivery of real-time results,
including delivery to the Internet for global access. To achieve the
IT&T visions for the Olympics 2000, SOCOG need over 2000 IT volunteers.
They are currently working with Australian Universities with the Technology
Specialist Volunteer Program. From now until after the games in 2000,
students from Universities will be working with the SOCOGIT group developing,
testing, implementing and running the systems that will make these games
the showcase of this century.
The University of
Wollongong is one of the Australian Universities providing students
to the IT volunteer program. UOW has been recognised for its outstanding
achievements, and is leading the way in practical quality education.
The University is in the Illawarra region as a Centre for Excellence
in New South Wales.
UOW's School of
Information Technology and Computer Science degrees lead the way on
offering a wide range of skills, equipping graduates to handle the challenges
of IT management, Software engineering and development techniques. These
are giving students the edge over other Australian universities, to
address the growing skill shortages for the well-paid jobs in the emerging
information economy. The school offers much more than undergraduate
degrees with comprehensive Masters, Honours, Masters and Doctorates
of Philosophy programmes. Graduate Certificate courses are also available,
specialising in Telecommunications and Information Security, which can
be articulated to Masters degrees.
UOW is located five
minutes walk from Wollongong city, and only on hour's drive from Sydney.
The campus is set in one of the most beautiful campus locations nestled
between the mountains and the sea. The sandy beaches and easy bush walks
provide great breaks from all the hustle and bustle of city life and
study. The ease of transport, inexpensive accommodation, plus the beauty
of the Illawarra region are qualities that make a UOW a student's first
choice. The excellent campus facilities boast a variety of recreational
facilities, and includes a state-of-the-art computer laboratories with
unlimited Internet access.
