The University of Ballarat is a modern university, which was first established in 1870, making it the third oldest tertiary institution in Australia, behind The University of Sydney (1850) and The University of Melbourne (1853), the University is the culmination of mergers of many different educational institutions over the years, Early in its history, it gaining an enviable reputation for courses in applied art and science, along with its close and strong links with industry. In 1994 the University of Ballarat gained its independent university status to become the University of Ballarat and continues to forge strong links with industry and to develop internationally recognised, relevant, and progressive courses for all of its students.
