| Are
you finding you need to speak and work in English more and more
in today's increasingly global economy? You might wish to improve
your English skills for a particular reason without being locked
into a course over which you have no control. If this is the
case, let us help you design a course to suit you and your company.
Lancashire
College specialises in organising and delivering customised
English training for people in business, industry and the
public sector. Courses can be tailored to your specific requirements,
can be any length of time and at any time of the year. The
course content and format will be decided by you and delivered
by tutors experienced in both business and general English
who will also guide and advise you on how best to maximize
your time. They will use a communicative approach with the
emphasis on speaking and listening to English and will give
you the confidence to communicate effectively. Whatever your
reasons for learning English - preparing a sales drive, negotiating
with your English-speaking counterparts, dealing with customers
and suppliers who only speak English, we at Lancashire College
will introduce and practise only relevant language in contexts
appropriate to your work
Over the
last 25 years we have hosted a variety of English courses
ranging from business people on a 1:1 basis to groups of 35
- 40 German trade unionists. We begin by conducting a careful
training needs analysis and then agree with the trainees and
their organisations the contents and objectives of the learning
programme. Some examples of the types of courses we have organised
are outlined below:
FIREFIGHTERS FROM LIBYA
At
the request of The International Fire Training Centre here
in Chorley we have hosted several small groups of fire-fighters
from Libya. They usually work in groups of 4-6 and before
embarking on a 6 month fire-fighting course, undergo 6-8 weeks
of intensive English language training with us. The objectives
are very precise, to introduce and practise vocabulary relating
to their field of work as safety officers in the oil fields
in Libya. Although understanding and speaking English is important
in order to gain the most from the fire-fighting course, they
also have to sit written exams during their course and therefore
their reading and writing skills are equally as important.
TRADE-UNIONISTS
FROM GERMANY
One
of Germany's largest trade unions, IG Metall, arranges courses
at Lancashire College every year for 35 members. The students'
aims are to improve their English and learn more about Britain,
British way of life and British trade unions. The course is
the culmination of a year-long programme during which the
participants firstly meet in German for several sessions and
then come together for this final event to totally immerse
themselves in the language and culture for two weeks. The
participants work in groups of up to 12 with people of a similar
level. They divide their time between classroom-based activities
and getting to know more about the local people and culture,
visiting local industries and meeting their counterparts and
working on projects in which they have a particular interest.
Speakers are invited to question and answers sessions on a
wide variety of topics and the highlight of the week is inevitably
a German/Austrian/British evening where, together with their
guests, the course participants experience a social evening
with entertainment provided by the Royal Preston Morris Dancers,
a truly authentic and most enjoyable regional experience.
1:1
INTENSIVE COURSES FOR BUSINESS PEOPLE FROM FRANCE, GERMANY,
ITALY, JAPAN, SPAIN, SOUTH AMERICA, SWITZERLAND, SWEDEN
Busy
business people do not have time to enrol on courses, which
do not meet their specific requirements and prepare for qualification
they do not need. Lancashire College can offer short, intensive
bursts of language training on a 1:1 or small group basis
- a quick and effective way of developing language skills.
The students benefit from individual tutor contact during
the day and evening with time built in for self-study. The
contact with the tutor includes breaks and mealtimes, during
which communication in English continues, though in a natural
context and at a more leisurely pace. The training will concentrate
on those areas required by the student and will give them
the confidence to communicate effectively by carefully staged
explanation and practice of language.
Lancashire College is a modern, specialist training complex
set in the pleasant semi-rural surroundings of the market
town of Chorley. It offers flexible, comfortable and practical
accommodation, including 34 study-bedrooms (some with en-suite
facilities), well-appointed seminar and conference rooms and
a lounge bar and restaurant. Chorley is situated in Northwest
England 25 miles from Manchester. This central regional location
ensures accessibility to many interesting places, the large
cities of Manchester and Liverpool, the historical towns of
Chester and York and for those who enjoy the countryside,
the breathtaking Lake District and Yorkshire Moors. These
attractions will ensure that you will enjoy your time spent
at Lancashire College outside as well as inside the classroom.
