| "
Small is certainly beautiful at Stirling. With fewer than 5,500
undergraduates, it is bigger than it once was, but the stunningly
beautiful campus soaks them up and still leaves the scenery
as the most noteworthy feature"
The
Sunday Times, University Guide, 19 September 1999

The
Centre for English Language Teaching, part of the newly constituted
Institute of Education, is situated in Airthrey Castle, an
attractive historic building built in 1793 by the classical
architect, Robert Adam, and containing fine wood carvings
and art objects collected by the original owners. It is surrounded
by the University golf course and overlooks the lake and the
nearby hills, while being just five minutes walk from the
other buildings of the University. The campus is one of the
most beautiful in Europe and is situated just 40 minutes outside
of Edinburgh.
Thanks
to a very varied range of programmes, the student body is
international and multi-cultural and overall numbers of approximately
150 students ensure a friendly atmosphere, good staff/student
ratios and a favourable study environment.

The
PhD programme

The Ph.D.
programme at CELT requires you to undertake a significant
research study in an appropriate area relating to the broad
area of language learning and teaching and resulting in a
thesis of not more than 80,000 words. You are expected to
devote the initial period to appropriate research planning
and training which may include participation in available
taught courses.
The Ph.D. may be studied full-time for between 2-4 years or
part-time for between 3-8 years. If you wish to study away
from Stirling University, you will be required to spend periods
of study at the University at certain times and especially
during the initial period.
Application
Procedure: You must send a completed application from
and detailed proposal for your research to the following address:

This
programme is open to both native and non-native speakers of
English and to graduates of any discipline. The course provides
a practical and thorough training in TESOL for those with or
without previous teaching experience. On completion, students
should possess the practical classroom skills to be confident,
critically reflective, and enterprising teachers of English
as a second/foreign language.
The Postgraduate
Diploma, lasting from September to June, is awarded on successful
completion of 6 taught modules.
Two methods
of study are available for the MSc TESOL. Students who do
not have 2+ years appropriate teaching experience take 8 modules
plus a project (10,000 words). Students who have 2+ years
appropriate teaching experience take EITHER 6 taught modules
plus a dissertation (20,000 words) OR 8 taught module plus
a project (10,000 words).

Undergraduate
Programmes
|
| The
BA in English Language and Business (BA in ELAB) |
| This
is a fantastic new 3-year general degree course for non-native
speakers of English who seek to gain a qualification in English
as a foreign language in combination with the study of different
areas of Business and Management. A minimum of 16 credits, in
the pattern
enclosed, must be successfully completed for the award of
the degree. Teaching will take place in the Centre for English
Language Teaching and in the Faculty of Management.
|
| BA
in English Language Teaching (BA in ELT) |
|
This is a three year degree programme for non-native speakers
of English who intend to return to their own countries to
teach English at the end of their period of study. It does
not confer an official professional qualification because
each country has its own regulations on what its teachers
require but it involves a wide-ranging study of language teaching
methodology. The academic units studied are:
UNITS
|
|
BA
in English as a Foreign Language (BA in EFL)
|
|
This
programme is designed for non-native speakers of English wanting
a high level of competence in English as a Foreign Language.
It is particularly useful for those who wish to enter careers
in Business and Management, Journalism, Translation, Interpreting
etc.
Students
on the BA in ESL study exactly the same subjects in first
year as those in the BA in ELT. From the beginning of second
year they can take 2 subjects from the University's BA degree
programme such as Accountancy, Business and Management, Economics,
Computing, Environmental Science, Psychology, Philosophy,
History, English Literature, Religious Studies and many others.
Because
the aim of the degree is to provide a high level of English
language competence it follows that second and third year
also contain units in English language which are compulsory
components of the programme. It is the opportunity to combine
the study of English language with two others subjects of
their choice which makes this programme so attractive to students
from many different countries of the world. A
typical programme looks something like this.

Application
Procedure: Applications should be made through UCAS (Universities
and Colleges Admissions Service). You can either apply for a
form in writing:
UCAS
Fulton House
Jessop Avenue
Cheltenham
Glos GL50 3SH
England
Or go
to:
UCAS SITE (http://www.ucas.co.uk/
Simply click on the link, which will take you through to the
UCAS site which will answer any queries you may have.
Applications
should preferably be made by December but it is possible to
apply right up until June. After that point the department
should be contacted by telephone, e-mail or fax to find out
if places are still available. The UCAS form is complicated,
mainly because it provides students with the opportunity to
choose from six courses or universities. It is not necessary
to list six: students who know where and what they want to
study, are welcome to limit their choice to less than six
if they wish. There may be a delay between applying and being
informed if the application has been successful.
Those
who find it difficult to choose between the BA in ELT or the
BA in ESL do not need to decide at the application stage.
All students on both programmes study the same academic units
in Year 1. It is only in May of first year that a choice must
be made and this affects the units studied from second year
on.
