What is the TOEFL pBT?
The TOEFL pBT test is a paper-based test that measures English language ability of non-native speakers of English. The TOEFL pBT is designed to inform institutions of how well you will be able to communicate in an academic setting.
Who is the TOEFL pBT for?
Most people take the TOEFL test as a prerequisite for admission into colleges and universities where English is used or required. The TOEFL pBT is considered too difficult for students below 11th grade.
Understanding your TOEFL pBT score report

- You will receive a score report both in print form and online.
- ETS will send your score report directly to up to four of the institutions you specified on the test day.
- Your score report will be sent up to approximately 5 weeks after the test date.
- Your score report will show three section scale scores and a total score.
- The total number of correct answers is called the 'raw score'.
- The raw score for each section is converted by statistical means to a number on what is the TOEFL test scale.
- The total paper-based test score is reported on a scale that ranges from 310 - 677.
- The TWE score is reported separately on a scale of 1-6.
Where can I take the TOEFL pBT?
The TOEFL pBT test is offered in locations where the TOEFL iBT (Internet-Based Test is not yet available. The TOEFL pBT is generally offered at institutional locations such as colleges and universities.

How do I Register?
You can register for the TOEFL pBT and TSE tests online at: www.ets.prg/toefl and www.ets.org/tse

If you are applying for the TOEFL pBT and the TSE test you must fill in two separate registration forms. You can obtain registration forms from the Information Bulletin, available to download online at: www.ets.org
Once completed, send the registration form and payment to the address on the form.
You cannot register by phone or email.
Register early as test centres fill up quickly.
How is the test structured?
The TOEFL pBT is 3.5 hours long in total and consists of three sections and a 30-minute writing test (the Test of Written English TWE). The TWE is compulsory for everyone taking the TOEFL pBT.
