Languages on Location

Whether you’re just beginning to learn a language, or have been studying one for some time, there is no greater catalyst for learning than going “on location”. Programmes such as Council Exchanges’ Languages Plus, which provides short-term language courses in France, Germany, Italy and Spain, help you become immersed in the culture and lifestyle of your chosen country. Even those who have no previous knowledge of a language can expect to have mastered the basics after just a two-week course, allowing you to communicate with the locals and put into practice the skills you have learnt in the classroom.

With schools in seven different European cities and classes starting every two weeks, Languages Plus provides programmes tailor-made for busy schedules. They are ideal for those who can only take a short break or want to combine a city-based cultural holiday with something a little more educational. One former participant, Robert Williams has just completed his first year at university and says, “As a university student, I wanted to spend part of my summer abroad. Languages Plus in Paris was an ideal way to do this, as I could improve my French whilst experiencing life in a great city.”

An important element of language immersion is having access to native speakers. While taking part in Languages Plus you can either live with your fellow students in self catering apartments and explore the country together, or live with local families in homestay accommodation, experiencing first-hand real family life. Either way there is time to make new friends, explore your surroundings and really put your new found skills to the test on a daily basis.

When you’re learning a language on location, the whole country becomes your classroom. Teachers who are native speakers keep students challenged by using current political, social and cultural materials. This not only increases knowledge of the target language, but allows you to learn about the country and its culture.

After classes are finished for the day, there is plenty of time to discover your new surroundings and take advantage of the cultural and social activities organised by the school’s staff. These optional activities include sightseeing trips, visits to the theatre and parties with your fellow students, making sure that you don’t miss out on the fun and enjoyment of discovering a new country. Of his experience, Walter Tucker says, “Languages Plus is the perfect combination of practicality and leisure. I spent two weeks in Malaga and not only learned the language, but made many friends with whom I am still in touch. We all plan to return to the school in Malaga next year.” In his free time, Walter was also able to relax on the seafront -- an added feature for Languages Plus students in Malaga and Nice!
