At
any time, more than 5000 students from all over the
world are studying at one of the numerous hotel management
schools in Switzerland for successful careers in hospitality
and its related fields. Today, a large number of executives
in the global hotel industry are graduates of Swiss
hotel schools. Why has the country reached such a dominant
position in this field? There are several reasons.
Interview
with the President of ASEH
The
Swiss Hotel Schools Association (ASEH)
Switzerland, the pioneer
country in hotel management education and training
has more than a century of history in preparing
world leaders for the hotel business. Although
the tourism industry from the late 19th century
through the years during and after World War Two
was not active on a large scale, being available
only for the rich and wealthy, today it has become
the largest economic factor in the world.
Hospitality
Tourism Education
A Canadian Perspective
Canada
has made hospitality and tourism an art, and many of
the countrys educational institutions specialize
in preparing people for careers in this dynamic sector.
Its easy to understand why. Tourism has always
played an important role in Canadas economy, as
for centuries people have enjoyed visiting this vast,
beautiful country. Now every year millions of people
visit hotels, restaurants, resorts and clubs across
Canada - injecting millions of dollars into a sector
that supports thousands of businesses and jobs.

Airports
to aeroplanes, luxury cruise liners to riverboat restaurants,
universities to schools, railway stations to express
trains, takeaways to top restaurants, city centre hotels
to bed and breakfast. Wherever we are, whether in a
department store, leisure centre or pub, or simply strolling
in the park, there is normally a hospitality enterprise
providing for our accommodation and dining needs.

Students in Tourism
Would you like to join them?
Tourism
is booming business, we know that because the Netherlands
Institute of Tourism and Transport Studies is one of
the oldest educational centres for tourism. The Institute
exists since 1966 and has developed into one of the
best known centres of expertise in tourism in Europe.
Because of its volume the Institute is able to develop
this expertise and also to develop further educational
specialist areas. The curricula are constantly innovated.
An example is the development of a specialism in sustainable
tourism development.
A
Hotel Management
Qualification
The
hospitality industry has been claimed to be a people-centric
industry, where its management success and failure revolves
around the management of people, particularly interactions
between guests and staff. There is an indicator, which
acknowledges the success or failure of such organisations,
it is the high level of skills and training of the staff
that work in such an industry.
The
Hospitality Industry
Creating Opportunities
The
International hotel Industry is facing an extreme shortage
of talented, competent, well trained AND experienced
Management staff. It is well documented that the Hospitality
Industry is expanding worldwide and figures show that
by the year 2005 the industry will employ more than
200 million workers.
Several
organizations have adapted formal programs and initiatives
in order to transition from traditionally homogenous
infrastructures to more diversified institutions.
These initiatives are truly commendable and are a
reflection of an evolving leadership that is more
open and has a willingness to embrace a new millennium
trend, which is quickly becoming conventional
globalization.
