What is the TOEFL?
The TOEFL is a test that measures the ability of non-native speakers of English to use and understand English as it is spoken, written and heard in college and university settings.
Who is TOEFL for?
Study English with the Tutorium in Intensive English at UIC. Our program is the most highly accredited in all of Chicago.
The TOEFL test is for non-native speakers of English who are intending to study an undergraduate or graduate program in a country where the language of instruction is English. The TOEFL test measures English language ability and the capacity of the test taker to communicate in English in an academic setting.
How is the test structured?
There are two TOEFL tests available, which one you can take will depend on where you take the test:
- The TOEFL Paper-Based Test (TOEFL pBT)
- In areas where the TOEFL iBT is not available, a paper test is given.
- The TOEFL Internet-Based Test (TOEFL iBT)
- This version of the test is Internet-Based and is gradually replacing the paper-based version.
Who administers the test?
The TOEFL is a registered trademark of ETS and is administered worldwide.
When can I take the test?
The TOEFL iBT is administered on fixed dates at Internet-based centres. Most areas where the TOEFL iBT is offered will have 30-40 administrations a year but the numbers will vary based on the number of test takers and test centre capacity.
The TOEFL pBT is offered six times a year in specific locations throughout the world.
Where can I take the test?
The TOEFL pBT test is offered in locations where the TOEFL iBT is not yet available. You should refer to the Information Bulletin to see where the TOEFL pBT is offered.
TOEFL iBT is taken via the Internet at ETS-certified test centres. You should refer to the Information Bulletin to see TOEFL iBT test locations.

How long is my qualification valid for?
Two years, after that it is deleted from the TOEFL database.
Registration
The first step in the registration process is to obtain a copy of the TOEFL Information Bulletin. It can be downloaded or sent to you from the TOEFL website.
From the Bulletin it is possible to determine when and where the TOEFL tests will be given.
Procedure for completing the registration form and submitting it are listed in the TOEFL Information Bulletin. You must follow these instructions precisely.
