What is the ILEC?
ILEC is an internationally recognised high-level language qualification for lawyers. Passing the ILEC indicates that you have a sufficient level of English to be able to communicate with clients and professionals in other countries, and to handle information written in English.Who is ILEC for?
The exam is a high-level legal-oriented language qualification for lawyers and law students set at levels B2 to C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.How is the test structured?
The exam is based on realistic tasks of the kind that legal practitioners would be expected to encounter in their daily working lives.The exam takes approximately four hours in total and consists of four papers:
1. Reading 50 marks
2. Writing 50 marks
3. Listening 50 marks
4. Speaking 50 marks
The Test of Speaking takes place separately from the other papers and is conducted face-to-face by qualified oral examiners.
How is the test scored?
Written papers are marked in the UK by Cambridge ESOL examiners.
All candidates receive a statement of results showing their performance on each of the four papers and an overall grade
There are three passing grades:
1. C1 Pass with merit
2. C1 Pass
3. B2 Pass
There are two failing grades: Narrow fail, and Fail
The overall grade is based on the total score gained in all four papers. Therefore, it is not necessary to achieve a certain level in all four papers in order to pass the exam.
Candidates who achieve passing grades will receive an official certificate awarded by University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations.
