1. Ensure that your learning goals are clear
Do you wish to pass a specific exam, improve your language skills for work purposes, travel or general use? A good school should ask you to fill out a "Needs Analysis" as well as a "Placement Test" to help them find the right programme for you.
2. Always do your research
It is important to check the language school's reputation and credentials which include comments from students and what qualifications are required of the teachers on the programme. There are a lot of very good schools around but watch out for the business driven institutions that rate profit over the real quality of teaching.
3. Ensure there is a clear educational program
You can ask to see an overview of the course content.
4. Monitor you progress
Schools should provide a variety of tests and exercises throughout the course that check your learning is successful. If this is not the case, measures must be taken by you or the school.
5. What can you get out of the program?
Find out is there is an end of course certificate of achievement, or of which recognized exams can be taken at the end of the programme.
