What does it test?
English language proficiency of Chinese college students. It is a national, standardised test.
Who is it for?
College students in China whose majors are not English. Many universities and colleges in China require a pass in one or both of the CET exams; failure to pass CET-4 means that a college student cannot get his/her bachelor degree and failure to pass CET-6 means that he/she cannot get his/her second bachelor degree or master degree. CET exams are also compulsory for many job applications in China.
Who administers the test?
The Ministry of Education of China.
How is the test structured?
The CET has two levels: Band 4 and Band 6. Both are intended for higher-level English.
Both exams consist of four sections:

Listening Comprehension
Listening material is chosen from dialogues, lectures and broadcasts.

Reading Comprehension

Comprehensive Testing
Has two sub-sections: cloze or error correction and essay questions. Essay questions will be based on a short passage or translation from Chinese to English.

When can I take the test?
CET-4 and CET-6 are held twice a year.
How is the test scored?
From June 2005, the scoring systems for the CET is as follows:
Marks range from 290 to 710. Candidates receive a test report ranging from 290 to 710 and their corresponding mark for each section.
