Research and Graduate Studies

The University of Limerick is a recognised leader in Irish education and a significant centre of research in a range of fields which are of strategic importance to the development of Ireland and the wider community. Since its inception, the University of Limerick has been committed to building a strong relationship with industry, commerce, the public sector and the professions, and this is reflected in its basic and applied research priorities.

The university is pursuing an ambitious strategic development plan, which includes substantial expansion of research activity. The plan envisages investment of over €l25 million on research infrastructure and special initiatives to attract additional talented researchers and high achieving graduate students. The University is developing the following areas, which it especially intends to develop as centres of research excellence and in which it is seeking to attract graduate students:

  • Information and Communication Technologies

  • Biosciences and Bio(medical) Engineering

  • Materials and Surface Science

  • Work. Productivity and Quality

  • Humanities and Social Sciences

Graduate students who apply to Limerick may choose between a mix of taught and research programmes, ranging from graduate diplomas and masters degrees to doctoral level research.
