Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Area

The 14 Strayer University campuses are conveniently located in Washington, D.C.,Virginia and Maryland. Campuses extend north to Baltimore, Maryland, and south to Richmond, Virginia. The area abounds with cultural, historical, and recreational attractions, including the Library of Congress; Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts; the Mall; Capitol; the White House; Lincoln, Jefferson and Vietnam Veterans Memorials; Smithsonian Institution; Mount Vernon; and many others.

Economy - Federal Government is the largest influence but also important are research and development, trade, education, and tourism. Government and commercial offices have spurred high-rise centers in Virginia's Crystal City, Reston, and Tysons Corner and Maryland's Bethesda and Rockville.

The Arts - The National Gallery of Art houses an extensive collection of masterpieces. The Smithsonian Institution contains the Air and Space Museum; Hirshhorn Museum & Sculpture Garden (contemporary art and sculpture); Renwick Gallery (American design); Museum of African Art (traditional and contemporary); Museum of American Art; Museum of American History; Museum of the American Indian; Museum of Arts and Industries; Museum of Natural History; and others. The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts offers a concert hall, opera house, several theaters, and the National Symphony Orchestra in residence.

Recreation - Rock Creek Park and C&O Canal contain trails for walking and jogging. Over a dozen regional parks offer tennis, walking and jogging, picnicking, horseback riding. The National Zoo also is a popular attraction. Available are approximately 100 golf courses, several marinas, and pleasure boating and fishing on the Potomac and Chesapeake Bay. Professional teams in football, basketball and ice hockey, two annual professional tennis tournaments, one golf tournament (Kemper Invitational in Potomac, MD), and thoroughbred and harness racing offer major sporting events. Boasting an array of restaurants, attractions, and shopping venues such as Pentagon City Mall, Virginia, the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Area is an ideal place to live and study.

Transportation - The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority operates a 70-station rapid rail transportation system (Metrorail) which currently terminates west at Vienna, Virginia; northwest at Shady Grove, Maryland; north at Wheaton, Maryland; northeast at New Carrollton, Maryland; and south at Huntington, Virginia. Metrorail connects downtown D.C. with the Pentagon, Crystal City, Washington National Airport, and many Virginia and Maryland suburbs. More stations are under construction with the entire system due to be completed by 2001. Metrorail is complemented by the metrobus system which links neighborhoods throughout the metro area. Interstates 66, 270, 95, and 495; Washington National, Dulles International, Richmond International and Baltimore-Washington International airports; and Amtrak rail connect the area nationally and internationally.
