The Center for Applied Studies in English (ASEC)
Intensive English Programs and Department of English as a Foreign Language. Southern Nazarene University Founded in 1899, Southern Nazarene University is a private, Christian, liberal arts university-a service of the Church of the Nazarene. Located on a 40-acre campus just west of Oklahoma City, OK, USA, the university grew out of several small colleges committed to training people for service to God and their fellow man.
ASEC is quite different from other English programs in some integral ways. We believe that international students come to American to study because they want to actually meet and make friends with Americans as well as learn about the culture. To make sure that this happens we have ASEC students live with American roommates and they have a different college student with whom they are required to meet once a week for conversation. Also, ASEC students attend a conversation class in the afternoon four days a week with American college students. ASEC teaches English to students in order to prepare them for both undergraduate and graduate classes at SNU. Students can earn a minor or associate's degree in English as a Foreign Language by attending ASEC classes or simply prepare their English for the university. Our students learn how to behave in an American classroom and what the American educational system expects or how it is different from what they have known before. We help them with their classes after they have finished the language school whenever they need it with free tutoring. We also help them with their day to day concerns such as simply as finding a ride to Wal-Mart or counseling them when they have to make hard decision about whether to go home to a sick grandparent or stay in school. We address the whole student, not just their educational needs.

At SNU, we specialize in knowing and caring about our students. Our classes usually have 20 or fewer students and at ASEC, classes are under 10 students per professor. Our professors know the names and majors of their students as well as something about who each student is as a person.

Because ASEC is a department of Southern Nazarene University, we offer benefits that other American universities cannot offer. Most importantly, we offer academic scholarships to international students based on their TOEFL, ACT, or SAT scores as undergraduate students. Students who have none of these may attend our intensive English programs, complete it with a high exit test score, and still receive up to $5000.00 every year toward their college expenses. We also try our best to provide on-campus jobs to defray the costs of studying in the United States.
