Discover some of the highlights of these major cities on our whistle-stop tour of Midwest America.
CLEVELAND, Ohio
Population: 480,000 (2000)
Sights: If you are interested in African-American history then go to the African-American Museum, one of the oldest of its kind in America. The collection of exhibits looks at both local and global history of African-Americans and has many tactile displays.
Things to Do: The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum is a popular destination for tourists and enthusiasts alike. Home to the 16st collection of rock and roll memorabilia in the US, this museum has everything from DJ's to Jimi Hendrix song lyrics. And the exterior looks pretty good too!
Nights Out: If you want to sample an authentic Irish pub experience then look no further than Flannery's Pub in the Gateway District. This venue is near the Cleveland Indians stadium and fills up fast on game day so get there early!
DETROIT, Michigan
Population: 900,000
Sights: Located on Belle Isle, Scott Fountain is an incredible sight to behold. This structure is made of Italian white marble and features an array of sea creatures and Neptune's spouting water into the air. A brilliant photo opportunity.
Things to Do: Detroit is a motor enthusiast's haven. Make sure you go to the Automotive Hall of Fame which is an establishment dedicated to all things to do with the growth and expansion of the motor vehicle industry. If that has left you wanting more then go to the General Motors Renaissance Center; the world headquarters of General Motors.
Nights Out: If you're the gambling type then go to Greektown Casino. With your winnings you can dine in one of the numerous restaurants, chill out to live music or go shopping.
INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana
Population: 800,000 (2000)
Sights: The Soldier's and Sailor's Monument is a popular tourist attraction. Erected in 1901, the monument stands at 284 ft tall and offers a solemn tribute to the thousands of lives lost in the Civil War. In December, the monument becomes the world's 16st Christmas tree when adorned with Christmas lights.
Things to Do: You must make time to visit the Indiana State House, which hosts the Indiana General Assembly, the Governor of Indiana, the state courts and other state officials. Thanks to a $10 million investment, this incredible building has been restored to its former glory and is open for visitors and guided tours.
Nights Out: If you're into blues music then you won't be disappointed with the Slippery Noodle Inn. This establishment is in the city's oldest commercial building and has heaps of character and history.
KANSAS CITY, Missouri
Population: 500,000 (2005)
Sights: Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art and Design is a museum with a modern and international flavour. Home to an extensive collection of international art, this museum exhibits works that are in a variety of media and use the latest technology.
Things to Do: From September to mid October, you should visit the Kansas City Renaissance Festival. Hundreds of people dress up in period costume and enjoy the variety of food and live entertainment available.
Nights Out: Why not wine and dine with the backdrop of live music at Jardine's Restaurant and Jazz Club. For beverages with a bit more kick then go to the Velvet Dog where you will find a wide selection of cocktails and a trendy atmosphere.
CINCINNATI, Ohio
Population: 340,000 (2005)
Sights: Get fantastic view of the city and the Ohio waterfront by scaling the heights of Carew Tower, a massive 574 ft high. If you think this building is reminiscent of the Empire State Building, you're not wrong. Designed by the same firm, Shreve, Lamb, just a few years earlier, the Carew Tower served as the basis for the design of New York's tallest building.
Things to Do: Redesigned last year, Fountain Square is home to a seasonal ice skating rink, LED videoboard, waterfall and the Tyler Davidson Fountain. It is also the home to many live performances and concerts. Check it out!
Nights Out: Make sure you pay a visit to Arnold's Bar and Grill, the oldest 'saloon' style bar in the city. If you like live music you won't be disappointed, Arnold's has music most nights a week and attracts a media crowd, didn't you know darling! If you fancy the authentic British pub experience with culinary classics such as fish and chips and bangers and bash then look no further than the Cock and Bull English Pub.
MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota
Population: 400,000 (2000)
Sights: Prepare to be amazed by Minneapolis Sculpture Gardens. Be inspired or simply relax in amongst 11 acres of gardens and over 40 modern 3-D art sculptures. Be sure to visit the 'Spoonbridge and Cherry' sculpture, it's a massive 52 ft spoon holding a 9.5 ft cherry.
Things to Do: Calling all shop-a-holics! The Mall of America in Minneapolis is the 16st in North America; it's got it all! Big names include Macys, Bloomingdales and Nordstones as well as the high street favourites and an array of speciality shops.
Nights Out: If you're looking for a venue with funk, reggae and R & B music then go to the Quest Club. Enjoy a taste of the organic as Lucia's Restaurant and Wine Bar. You won't find any nasty additives of E-numbers here; only food locally grown is served.
ST. LOUIS, Missouri
Population: 350,000 (2005)
Sights: St. Louis' skyline wouldn't be the same without the iconic Gateway Arch. Standing at 192m high and made of stainless steel, this structure means business.
Things to Do: If you're feeling adventurous then go to Six Flags theme park. There are eight different themed areas and plenty of exhilarating rides to choose from, we recommend you test your nerve on 'The Boss'. For a less energetic outing, perhaps you would like to go to the Museum of Contemporary Religious Art situated on the campus of St. Louis University
Nights Out: If you're in need of caffeine then pay a visit to Park Avenue Coffee, Lafayette Square. Reportedly you will find the best coffee in St. Lois here as well as baked goods and yummy cakes. Why not sit on a patio and watch the sun go down at King Louie's. With a stunning oak bar and a relaxed atmosphere, this bar will leave a nice taste in your mouth.
MILWAUKEE, Wisconsin
Population: 600,000 (2005)
Sights: The St. Joan of Arc Chapel in the grounds of Marquette University is not to be missed. Check out the stone that Joan of Arc reportedly kissed before she died; it's meant to have an icy chill.
Things to Do: The ever-expanding Milwaukee Art Museum hosts a growing collection of art from around the world in a huge assortment of media. The architecture of this building is itself an artwork and not to be missed.
Nightlife: Pay a visit to the Hi Hat Lounge if you fancy upmarket, modern and slick surroundings to consume a few cocktails. The Parkbar has something for everyone. You can relax in the lounge of the Martini Bar, sample the music in the Main Room or dance the night away in the trendy European-style 'Club Absolute.'
