Will Smith may have made the city popular with his 1998 song, "Miami," but this southern hotspot has much more to offer than a tremendous nightlife and a whole lotta sun! Located in southeastern Florida, Miami is home to over 400,000 people, of which over 60% are Hispanic and 22% are African American. With so much diversity, there is never a dull moment in the "Magic City"!
Just A Walk On The Beach
If there's one thing that you don't want to miss in Miami it's a day (or two, or three) relaxing on one of the most famous beaches in the United States. Miami Beach is right outside the city limits and during any time of the year it's a major attraction for visitors. With many restaurants, shopping, and lodging, you're sure to get everything you need right from Miami Beach. Shopping is never a problem, and anywhere you go in the city will lead you to trendy boutiques and unique shops. Don't miss out.
Let's Go Team!
If sports are your thing, Miami boasts some of the most well-known athletic teams in the country. From the Miami Dolphins (American football) to the Florida Marlins (baseball) to the Florida Panthers (hockey) to the Miami Heat (basketball), the city is never short on athletic entertainment. In fact, Miami has also been known for hosting professional tennis matches and for beautiful golf courses even the professionals enjoy. With over a handful of fine colleges and universities in the city, there is always a bustle about college sports too-especially football and basketball. In fact, at the end of college football season, the Orange Bowl is held in Miami for two top teams. This New Year's Day tradition is a must-see for football lovers in the States, so if you're in town, look for tickets and check it out in person!
Tastebud Tantalizers
If you're looking for good foods and original tastes, you've come to the right place. The food, like the people, is incredibly diverse and you're sure to find something new and delicious everywhere you look. Miami specializes in what has become known as "New World Cuisine," a fusion of Latin, Caribbean, and Asian flavored dishes. With over 6,000 restaurants catering to every budget, you're sure to find a taste you crave at a price you'll love. If you're looking for food that's cheap but tasty, you might try Pizza Rustica or David's Café. If you have a few more bucks to spend, look for Big Pink, Larios on the Beach, Grass Restaurant and Lounge, or La Carreta. Finally, if you're really looking to spend some money on dinner, check out Chef Allen's, Tantra, Ola, or Nobu. The food in Miami will certainly never let you down!
Play That Funky Music and Dance The Night Away
With the diverse population in Miami, it's no wonder that the music is just as varied. With influences from Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Columbia, the Caribbean, and the West Indies, lots of strong beats and catchy rhythms can be found on the streets and in the clubs. Freestyling, in both music and dance, has become commonplace and locals and visitors alike can enjoy this dynamic scene. Many famous rap and hip-hop artists got their start in Miami, making it one of the top places to listen and dance to your favorite tunes.
As far as clubs go, Miami boasts some of the best nightlife in the US, and there is sure to be one to fit your every whim. There are upscale hotel bars, bars favored by locals, sports bars, and nightclubs, so whatever your mood there's sure to be something to fit your needs. Dressing to impress is important, so when you go out, look your best. Most clubs charge an entrance fee, some as much as $20 per person, so have cash handy. And never, under any circumstances, insult, bribe, or try to get past a bouncer anywhere you go. More than likely you'll just look stupid and not get in anyway. Play it cool and wait your turn, and you'll have no problems. If you're looking for some cool places to go, check out:
