Orientation Week at US Colleges
Congratulations! You have received an offer from your dream US university - well done! This is an exciting time. You have received the offer letter; started celebrating and. a new life overseas beckons. Then one day in the post you discover reams of information regarding your arrival in the States. You are told to arrive on time for 'orientation'...hmm... what exactly is orientation? Fear not...all will be explained!
So...What is Orientation?
Orientation is a programme of events organised by the international office of your college or university to help you adjust to study and life in the US. Sounds scary? Well, it really shouldn't. Orientation helps students find their feet and gets them settled in to campus life before the academic semester begins and all the other American students arrive. This is a good chance to become familiar with both US culture and the education system. Orientation is fun and the busy programme of events should keep any feelings of home-sickness at bay. American students also participate in an orientation programme when they arrive on campus, so you're not alone.
Do I have to be involved in Orientation Week?
Most US universities have mandatory orientation programmes for international students. This is not only to get you to make friends and socialise before classes start, but also to explain the rules and regulations relating to your studies. Orientation will usually include information sessions on the requirements of your visa, how to register for classes, using the university health centre and the practicalities of living on campus. This information is crucial for your studies so make sure you listen and take notes if necessary. To cite one example, the University of Pennsylvania's program for international students includes sessions on computing on campus, academics, staying healthy in the States and cultural adjustment. So, all in all it can be very busy! Upon arrival on campus you will be given an orientation timetable detailing all the events and talks on offer. Some sessions will be compulsory, whereas social events such as dinners may be optional.
What will I gain from Orientation Week?
Perhaps one of the most useful aspects of the orientation programme is that gradually you will become familiar with the US college terminology that you will come to use while a student in the states. During orientation staff from the International Office will explain terms such as 'freshman', 'semesters', 'GPA' and much more. Even if your native tongue is English, you will be surprised at how much vocabulary is new to you.
While many students feel that they know what to expect from a US college given the universality of US television shows like The OC, life in the US will probably be very different from your home country. Most orientation programmes include a talk on US customs and culture. You may know some of this already but it is very likely that you will learn a lot during this session. Keep an open mind, and remember that this information is important. The university staff that run orientation are experienced and have chosen to highlight the things they know you need to know. Tracy Nakajima who runs Central Michigan University's international orientation sums up the purpose of orientation as follows, 'Orientation provides students with a comprehensive overview of the university, university life and the US higher educational system. It allows the new student to become familiar with the new educational system, structure and expectations prior to the start of classes. It provides them with a framework for success within the university.'
Orientation also gives new students a chance to socialise and meet new people. Many universities offer befriending schemes during orientation whereby you have the chance to be matched with a 'host' family. This gives you the opportunity to meet 'real' Americans, and mix with local people other than the students in your classes or dorms. The host family experience can be very rewarding and often lifelong friendships will blossom. It is often a source of comfort to have a home away from home while in the US, and enjoy festivities such as Thanksgiving dinner, Fourth of July fireworks or a Labor Day barbeque.
Any Extra Perks to the Week?
Last but certainly not least, one of the best parts of orientation is al the free food! Social events will be organised by university staff, religious groups and various student clubs on campus featuring many ice cream nights, pizza parties and dinners. These events offer a great opportunity to meet other students with similar interests and enjoy a nice treat. Make the most of your orientation. Get involved and enjoy the time you have on campus before the real work begins!
