Ramesh Dewan, an elected member of the Liberal Democrat Federal Executive recently stated "In these days of Coalition Government Expenditure Cuts, it is vital that British Universities maximise their income from overseas students" he pointed out that "According to the Britich Council, in total, £1.88 bn of UK universities' income came from non-EU students in 2007/08, while government research grants accounted for less at £1.76 bn".
However all tallied up, the Joint Council for the Welfare of Immigrants reckons that fees and costs from international students generate between £5.3bn and £8bn every year. That's before even considering the benefits to the rest of the economy, generated by cash spent on food, housing, travel and entertainment.
Overseas tuition fees alone can range from £4,000 to £21,000 per year, depending on the institution, the level of course and the type of course. "Immigrants and international students are an opportunity, not a threat. They don't intend to scoop up every British job that could have gone to a British worker. What they do hold are immense resources – financial and otherwise – that will help, not hinder, the UK's economic recovery while stimulating the economy of knowledge too. If that's not a win-win, I don't know what is".
Ramesh Dewan went on to condemn the Language School Industry and rogue agents who bring bogus overseas students into the UK and called on the coalition government to continue to persue initiatives to prevent this.

Britain is beginning to topple America from its position as the most popular place for overseas students to study, according to a recent survey.
Prospective students from around the world reckon the UK is safer than the United States, has respected higher education institutions and, amazingly given the complaints about British immigration control, is easier to get a visa to study in, says the survey from the International Graduate Insight Group (i-graduate).
