Funded by
The Department for International Development and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.
Commonwealth Scholarships and Fellowships are offered by the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission in the UK, as part of Britain's contribution to the international Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan.
Who is it for?
The awards are aimed at Commonwealth citizens of high academic ability, who are expected to make a significant contribution to their home countries upon return from study in the UK.
In the case of awards to developing countries, emphasis is placed on candidates whose work is likely to contribute directly to development objectives.
In the case of the developed Commonwealth, particular attention is placed on the involvement of those likely to become leaders in their chosen profession.
Awards are generally available to citizens of any Commonwealth country.
Scholarships are generally available for postgraduate study, although if there are no undergraduate courses in a particular subject in you own country or regional university, it may sometimes be possible for you to apply to do a first degree course under this scheme.
What does it cover?
Scholarships are usually tenable for between one and three years and cover the cost of travel to and from the UK, tuition fees and living expenses. In some cases an allowance may be paid to help with the case of maintaining a spouse and family in the UK.
Other Awards
Professional Fellowship Awards
Professional Fellowship awards, typically three months in length, provide opportunities for individuals working in developing Commonwealth countries to spend a short period of professional updating in the UK.
Academic Staff Fellowships
Academic Staff Fellowships offer opportunities for a six-month period of postdoctoral research to Commonwealth citizens holding or returning to a teaching appointment in a university in the developing Commonwealth. Fellowships are usually tenable for between three and six-months and cover the cost of travel to and from the UK, tuition fees and living expenses.
How do I apply?
Applications should be made in the first instance to the Commonwealth Scholarship Agency in your own country. These are listed on the CSFP website which also gives information about other funding opportunities within the CSFP.
