Known as the Harvard of India, Manipal is a dedicated university city in the state of Karnataka. Home to just one institution – the respected Manipal University – this is a city buzzing with creativity and youthful activity.

Manipal is home to more than 70,000 students and the university is its main focus, with the campus dominating. The nearest cities to Manipal are temple city Udupi and the modern metropolis of Mangalore, which is about an hour’s drive away.

Study in Manipal?

Manipal is a university town and home to one major institution – Manipal University. The university has 19 colleges where you can study, with particular expertise in the business, engineering and health sciences fields.

Undergraduate degrees at Manipal University generally take between 3-4 years to complete, although some degrees will take longer depending on the subject and mode of study you choose.

Immigration and visas

Indian student visas are issued for the duration of your undergraduate course in Manipal up to a maximum of five years. In order to qualify for a student visa, you will need to demonstrate the following:

  • You have a confirmed place on a course at a recognised education institution
  • You are not already in the country on a tourist or business visa
  • You have paid all relevant visa fees
     
You can apply for a student visa either at your national Indian embassy or online. Student visas are multiple entry but do not allow you to work while in India. Students with spouses will be able to apply for a spousal visa for their partner to join them.

Accommodation and living costs

As a dedicated student city, Manipal University provides accommodation to all students coming to study here. The university offers three halls of residence on campus which are divided by sex and by college.

You may be asked to share a room with another student in some accommodation, but all places come with cooking facilities and common rooms.
