Study In Rotterdam - Explore Universities in Rotterdam

Study in Rotterdam, and find the best universities in Rotterdam.

The Netherlands second city and home to the second largest port in the world, Rotterdam is an exciting city that has the world openly flowing in through its doors.

Largely destroyed in the Second World War Rotterdam has since emerged as a vibrant, modern and cosmopolitan metropolis which has as much to offer international students as Amsterdam.

With a vivid and varied history, exciting waterfront attractions and fantastic night life it is culturally exciting and has something for everyone.

With its brilliant transport network it is easy to navigate the city but also connect with the rest of the Netherlands and the rest of Europe.

Study in Rotterdam?

The Netherlands has one of the most respected and oldest higher education systems in the world, dating back as far as the 16th century. Study in Amsterdam is the perfect way to take advantage of the high quality of teaching in a vibrant, liberal and student-friendly city.

Although Rotterdam has many institutions where you can study a undergraduate program, the major university is the Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR), which is a major international student institution.

You can also study a undergraduate program in Rotterdam at some of the following institutions:

• Willem de Kooning Academy
• Hogeschool Rotterdam
• Hogeschool INHOLLAND
• Hogeschool voor Muziek en Dans
• Shipping and Transport College

You should expect your course to take between 1-3 years to complete, depending on the mode and subject of study.

Many courses are taught in English, so language skills may not be necessary.

Tuition fees to study in Rotterdam are very reasonable for students from inside the European Union, with the average annual fee at €1,950 (~US$2,200). For non-EU students you can expect to expect to pay between €6,000 and €15,000 (US$6,750 - 16,850).

Immigration and visas

Most international students will need a study permit to study on an undergraduate degree in Rotterdam and others may need to apply for temporary residence.

European Union students are able to study in Rotterdam providing they are studying at an approved institution for more than three months and have sufficient income to support themselves.

Non-EU students will need to apply for a visa dependent on their nationality.

You will generally need to show the following, regardless of your nationality:

• You have a confirmed place on a course at a recognised education institution
• You are not already in the country on a tourist or business visa
• You have paid all relevant visa fees

Depending on their nationality students may need to apply for a provisional residence permit called an MVV (Machtiging tot Voorlopig Verblijf). The Nuffic website has the information on this.

Students will also need to prove they can provide €833.22 a month to cover living costs.

Accommodation and living costs

The cost of living in Rotterdam is comparable to many other European cities, however as a student city it is possible to find students discounts on food, clothing and entertainment. It’s important to remember that most students in the Netherlands live in private accommodation and not university halls, which can increase your costs.

Your chosen university may be able to arrange a room in a shared house for you, which is much easier to sort out than finding a room privately.

Accommodation costs in the Netherlands depend on which institution and city you’ve chosen to study your undergraduate degree in.

As a guide, you should expect to pay somewhere between €300 - €600 per month, depending on whether bills are included in your rent.

Some good sites to look for student accommodation in the Netherlands include:

• Easykamer
• Kamernet
• DUWO
• HousingAnywhere
