Known as the UK’s cultural capital, Manchester gave birth to the Madchester music scene of the 90s and is home to several world class galleries and museums. This is a city where students study and play hard.

Manchester is notable for its clubbing, music scene and major sports teams. With its international airport, excellent transport links and proximity to the English countryside, it’s not surprising that Manchester is one of the most popular destinations for international students in the UK.

Most undergraduate degrees in Manchester will take between 3-4 years to complete, but some short courses may also be available.

Immigration and visas

EU citizens are allowed to come and study an undergraduate degree in Manchester providing they fulfil the following criteria:

  • Are studying in the UK for more than three months
  • Are enrolled at an accredited university or institution
  • Have proof of sufficient funds to cover your undergraduate degree in the UK for its duration
     
If you are a non-EU student coming to Manchester to study, you’ll need to apply for a student visa under the tier 4 visa category. In order to qualify, you’ll need to demonstrate the following:

  • Proof of funding to cover an undergraduate course and living costs
  • A confirmation of acceptance to study (CAS) reference from a university with sponsor status
  • Adequate English language skills

Accommodation and living costs

As one of the UK’s major student cities, Manchester has plenty of student accommodation. Students tend to live in the suburbs of Fallowfield, Withington and Didsbury, but an increasing number are opting to take advantage of the surplus of flats and move into city centre living.

Most international students coming to Manchester will choose to live in dedicated halls of residence on arrival, as this is the easiest way to settle into student life.

Private accommodation in Manchester is plentiful. Expect to pay around £300 a month for a room in a shared house.
