The education options are pretty good too. With more than 70 private universities in the state and two Ivy League colleges (the only state to have more than one), New York State is a great place to be an international student.

Study in New York?

New York State is home to a number of public and private institutions where you can study as an international student, including two Ivy League schools in Cornell University in Ithaca and Columbia University in New York City. You can study a degree in New York at the following universities:

Undergraduate degrees in New York will take between 2-4 years to complete, depending on the subject and mode of study you choose. An Associate degree will take two years to complete, a Bachelors four.

Immigration and visas

Before travelling to the USA to study, you will need to apply for a non-immigrant visa for study in New York.

The most common kind of student visa is the F-1 visa, which entitles the holder to study at any US accredited college or university.

To apply for a student visa, you will need to fill out an application form (found on the US Embassy website) and send appropriate documentation, such as evidence of financial standing and proof of university acceptance and academic qualifications, as well as possibly attending a visa interview at the US Embassy in your home country. 

Accommodation and living costs

The best option for an international student new to life in New York is to choose to live in university accommodation, as this will allow you to settle into life in New York easily and get to meet fellow students. Most halls of residence in New York have facilities like a gym, outdoor areas and bars.

New York is not a cheap city to live in, so you should expect your rental costs to be high if you do decide to live privately.
