The one-year taught
MSc in Criminology and Criminal Justice offers a balance
between theory, evidence, and practice. It is suitable for those
pursuing academic or practitioner careers, for example in research,
local government, social work, the prison service, or the police
service. The course is well-established, and attracts students
of many nationalities and from varied academic and vocational
backgrounds. It is one of a small number of Masters courses
in Criminology that are recognized by ESRC as providing appropriate
research training for PhD students ('1+3 recognized'). Students
resident in the UK and other EU countries are eligible for ESRC
bursaries (fees and maintenance for UK students, fees only for
students from other EU countries). |

As well as having
a strong reputation in theoretical criminology, the Law School is
home to the Edinburgh Study of Youth Transitions and Crime, a broadly-based
programme of studies on causes of offending among a cohort of 4,300
young people in Edinburgh, currently aged 16. The MSc is both sociological
and socio-legal in content. Prior training in Criminology or Law is
not required, although it is of course useful. Students take all the
core courses, plus three optional courses. |
