Overview/History

Thanet College was founded in 1947 and is part of the State Education System. Over 2000 students study on fulltime courses, while another 4000 students attend a range of part-time programmes during the year. The vast majority of students are local, with a small number drawn from mainland Europe. The College has been welcoming applications from overseas students for over 15 years and we have around 150 international students studying at the College and have had a dedicated International Section for 10 years. All of our courses are open to both male and female students over the age of 16 and application from mature students are especially welcome.

Thanet College is set in the beautiful countryside of Kent in the South East of England, in the picturesque seaside town of Broadstairs. London and the historic City of Canterbury can be reached easily by train, and Europe is only a short distance away.

Students come to study at Thanet College to gain internationally recognised qualifications for entry to the professions, skilled vocational areas or to prepare to study at undergraduate level at University.

We offer a wide range of study-levels from GCSE, A Level, NVQ levels 2, 3, and 4, GNVQ Advanced including Foundation/Access Courses to Higher National Diplomas & Bachelors Degrees. We also offer English as a Foreign Language.

Accommodation

Excellent accommodation is arranged for you by the College. You stay with carefully selected English families in Broadstairs, all families are within 15/20 minutes walking distance from the College.

We can arrange either self-catering accommodation with a family for £66.00 per week or full-board accommodation for £84.00 per week. Full board accommodation includes laundry, breakfast, evening meals and lunches at the weekend. All rooms are single occupancy (i.e. you don't have to share a bedroom).

Please note that there are no halls of residence within the College.

Airport Collection Service

The College can arrange a car to meet you at the airport and take you directly to your host family accommodation. After a long flight you will enjoy a relaxing drive through the Kent countryside. In 2 hours you will arrive at the seaside town of Broadstairs. The cost from Gatwick is £65.00 and from Heathrow is £75.00.

Facilities/Services


Modern Library, Computing & Learning Resource Facilities

The College offers a multimedia and computerised library and resource centre offering www access, video conferencing, media editing suite, audio-video aids preparation and an Open Learning Suite.

Social & Cultural Activities

The College operates an International Student's Social Club (ISSC).

Students meet every Thursday evening for a range of social activities, e.g., film/theatre nights, cultural evenings, bowling, ice-skating, fun golf, disco's, Sandwich river cruises, etc.

The ISSC also arranges trips fortnightly on Saturdays for sightseeing, shopping and visiting historical places of interest e.g. Canterbury, London Museums, London Eye, Buckingham Palace, Cambridge, Brighton, Dover Castle, Leeds Castle, Hampton Court Palace, Bluewater Shopping, Howlett's Zoo, etc.

Student Refectories/College Restaurant/Coffee Bar

The College has two Student Refectories offering an excellent selection of meals, from snacks to three course meals and vegetarian dishes.

Students can also eat at the College Restaurant, which is run by qualified staff and practising students, and meals are offered at concessionary rates.

In addition to the above, the College has recently opened a Coffee Bar, which sells a range of hot and cold drinks and delicious cakes.
Travel Agency on Campus

Campusbound Travel is located on the College Campus and is run by qualified staff and practicing students. The travel agency is a fully bonded ABTA member. Students can book package holidays, flights, ferries, UK breaks, insurance, car hire and exchanging currency.

Hairdressing/Beauty Salons

The Hairdressing and Beauty Salons are again run by qualified staff and practicing students and all treatments are offered at discounted prices.

Hair care includes shampoo, cut and blow-dry, perms, colouring, highlights, lowlights and conditioning treatments.

The Beauty Salon offers facials, make-up, body massage, back massage, Indian head massage, aromatherapy, reflexology, electrical slimming treatments, sauna, spa baths, steam bath, sunbed, manicure, pedicure, waxing, electrolysis etc.

Gym & Fitness Studio

You may prefer to have your own Personal Trainer who can devise an individual fitness programme for you or you are welcome to join on of our Fitness Classes in the studio with our Advanced Fitness Instructors. Classes include Aerobics and Circuit Training.

Student Centre/Cyber Cafe

The Student Centre has been set up as a recreational area with an informal atmosphere and is somewhere for you to relax when you have free time during your College day. The Student Centre area is equipped with pool tables, video games, juke-box and board games. You can use it for the activities that it offers or simply for socialising with friends.
The Cyber Centre is also located in the Student Centre, you can use PC linked directly to the Internet for both coursework and recreational purposes. All students receive free internet access and email accounts.

Sports

The College is a member of the Kent Colleges Student Sports Association. We have five main sports, each with its own coach. They are:

  • Football
  • Hockey
  • Rugby
  • Netball
  • Basketball

College teams for all of the above are entered in both the inter-college league and knock-out competitions. Friendly matches are also organised against other educational and local organisations.

In addition to the above, there is also a Table Tennis Club which practices in the Student Centre.

Student Support

Welfare/Counselling Service

The International Office has a dedicated Cultural & Welfare Advisor, who is able to assist you and offer advice on health, accommodation, welfare, employment, financial guidance, personal counselling, immigration, and police registration issues etc.

Careers Advice

A team of Careers Advisors are available to help you develop your career ideas or find a university course - they also have details on jobs.

If it is part-time work you are after, come and see the Job Centre Representative. Part-time jobs are always on display in the Guidance and Admissions Centre.

Student Group Tutor

You will have a Group/English Language Tutor who is responsible for providing support, monitoring your progress and to offer advice and assistance on you programmes of study.

FREE English Language Support for students on Full-time Courses

Once your programme of study commences, the EFL Instructors will be available to assist you with; assignments, project work, presentations, study skills, IELTS preparation, and general English.

Tuition Fees

EFL classes start from £99.00 per week for 15 hours and £130.00 per week for 21 hours per week.

Full-time courses start at £4,500.00 per academic year and include tuition, examination entry and 3-4 hours English language and study skills support per week.
