Why Choose UWCN?

  A Vibrant Area

By studying at UWCN you will not only benefit from a University with an outstanding academic reputation and excellent facilities, you will also be living in an area with a rich heritage of language, literature and art.

Not many campuses can rival UWCN's - it has far reaching views of the rolling Welsh hills, but the city of Newport is only a short bus
ride away.

The gateway to Wales, Newport is an area steeped in rich cultural, historical and industrial traditions. Newport continues to attract unrivaled levels of inward business investment and is widely regarded as a centre of excellence in the fast growth high-technology markets.

  An excellent place to study

The University is housed on two campuses:

The lively Caerleon Campus is the main administrative centre of the University. It has four academic schools: Humanities & Science; Art, Media & Design; Education; and the Centre for Community and Lifelong Learning. The site also houses hundreds of students in its purpose built 'student village'. Although the impressive red brick main building with its imposing clock and flagpole was built in 1912, it is surrounded by modern purpose-built facilities with state-of-the art equipment to meet the demands of students studying for careers in the 21st century.

The visually striking Rathmell Building, designed by Norman Robson Smith, was opened in 1985 to house the internationally recognised School of Art, Media & Design. The School is renowned for its excellent research record and it has some of the best-equipped workshops and studios in Europe.

The second campus is based in Allt-yr-yn, a quiet, residential area, which is just a short walk away from Newport City Centre. Three academic schools are based on this site: Business & Management; Social Studies; and Computing & Engineering. Students have access to an extensive library and learning resources centre, two refectories, an excellent language centre, student support services, careers services and a student shop on campus.

  … As well as Relax

When you join the University of Wales College, Newport you automatically become a member of the Students' Union. The Union ensures that students get the most out of the time they spend in Newport. The Union is run by students, for students, and encourages all students to participate.

Regular and diverse entertainment is provided by the Union on the Caerleon Campus, ranging from comedy nights, theme nights and house nights. The highlight of the social calendar is the May Ball which presents top names with local talent.

The Union also helps to fund and maintain a wide range of clubs and societies. Whatever your interest you should find a society devoted to it - if not, form your own!

Whether your course involves sports or you enjoy keeping fit or even want to take up a new activity, you are in for a treat at Newport! The Sports Centre provides students with a full range of sporting, fitness and leisure experiences - catering for the total beginner through to the international athlete. The centre-piece of the sports complex is the sports hall with a gransprung floor which can host badminton, volleyball, netball, cricket, hockey, trampolining, gymnastics and short tennis.

Accompanying the sports hall is a newly furnished gymnasium and a modern fitness suite with over forty pieces of cardiovascular weights, resistance and free weights equipment.
