Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam is ranked amongst the world's top 100 universities, known for its exceptional research and interdisciplinary education. The VU Amsterdam Summer School allows youto take full advantage through intensive, interdisciplinary courses. Each course is offered on a small scale, with a maximum of 25 students. The small class-size provides room for discussion with your fellow students, coming from all parts of the world. You gain an in-depth look at your field of study through interactive lectures and personal attention from your professors.
Part of the multi-disciplinary feature of the programme is the use of Amsterdam and the Netherlands as part of the classroom and learning environment. With your fellow students you will visit cultural sites and neighborhoods that help enrich the learning experience. Examples are trips to the world-renowned Rijksmuseum, the International Criminal Court, Adidas MiCoach Performance Centreand many other global leaders in culture, innovation, science, and technology. The courses take advantage of VU Amsterdam being a leader in interdisciplinary research, as well as being located in Amsterdam, a dynamic international metropolis.

In 2017 the VU Amsterdam Summer School offers 3 blocks with 2-week courses in various study fields. You can create your own summer programme by combining courses to study 2, 4 or 6 weeks in Amsterdam.
The dates of 2017 are the following:
Block 1: 8 to 22 July
Block 2: 22 July to 5 August
Block 3: 5 to 19 August
The tuition fee for one two week course will be either €1000 or €1150. This depends on the number of excursions and guest lecturers. All courses offer at least one excursion, but often many more.
Included in the tuition fee are:
- Airport pick-up service
- Course excursions
- On-site support
- 24/7 emergency assistance
- Transcript of records after completion of the course
Excluded from tuition:
- Social programme activities
- Costs for housing
- Travel and living expenses, such as: plane tickets, public transportation costs, food and drinks.
- You have two options for housing with VU Amsterdam Summer School:
- University campus housing: Uilenstede - €450
- Off-campus housing: Hotel Jansen - €545
An extensive social programme is available if you want to explore more outside of your course. You can make your own selection of activities. A few popular programmes:
- Visit to the Anne Frank House, combined with a lecture by Dr. Dienke Hondius, History professor at VU Amsterdam.
- Several city walks through different neighborhoods of Amsterdam.
- Day trips to the Veluwe National Park and Kröller-Muller Museum, and The Hague.
You apply for the VU Amsterdam Summer School by filling out an online application form. In the form you will be asked to provide the following documents:
- Motivation letter. Please make sure to describe your motivation for the specific course(s) you apply for: Why this topic? How will the course contribute to your future (academic) career?
- Curriculum Vitae/Résumé
- Transcript of records (a printscreen of your most recent grades is sufficient)
- Copy of passport/identification
Deadline for application is 1 May 2017. It is advisable to apply and pay sooner, to guarantee your place before a course is full! Admission will be definite once we assess your application on the basis of the entry requirements, availability in the courses, and once we have received your payment. Your place in the VU Amsterdam Summer School will not be guaranteed until we have received your payment.
It is not necessary to provide us with proof of your English. We do expect your English to be sufficient to understand classes and course literature.
