Hong Kong has everything. This is one of the world’s major financial powers, with a shimmering skyline and thousands of millionaire businessmen living it up in five-star hotels. However, you don’t have to be rich to study a degree in Hong Kong. This is one of the world’s best cities for food, which is incredibly cheap. You can do tai chi at dawn, lunch at a monastery, watch the sunset from the mountains and then party the night away in Tsim Tsa Shui all in one day.

However, Hong Kong is more than just city living. It has deserted islands, mountains, beaches and plenty of greenery for when you need to get away from your studies.

Study in Hong Kong?

Although Hong Kong used to follow the British education system, the government has recently begun to implement a policy of teaching lectures in Cantonese. There are currently nine public universities where you can study a degree in Hong Kong, including:

The majority of undergraduate degrees in Hong Kong are taught in English, with undergraduate degrees taking between three to four years to complete.

Immigration and visas

Foreign students intending to study a degree in Hong Kong for longer than six months need to apply for a student visa. Applicants will need the following:

  • A passport valid for at least six months after arriving in Hong Kong
  • A letter of admission from an accredited university
  • Proof that you can meet the financial costs of studying in Hong Kong

Accommodation and living costs

Most international students coming to Hong Kong to study an undergraduate course opt to stay in university accommodation, as this is the easiest way to meet fellow students and get accommodation quickly.

However, if you do decide to go for private accommodation, Hong Kong has plenty to offer and its subway system makes it extremely easy to get around. Students tend to live in the following areas:

  • Southern Kowloon (Jordan, Yau Ma Tei, Mongkok)
  • Tin Hau
  • Fortress Hill
  • North Point
Accommodation in Hong Kong tends to be small, with box rooms and studios the norm. Expect to pay around HK$5,000-HK$10,000 per month (£400-£800).
