Study In Chennai - Explore Universities in Chennai

Study in Chennai, and find the best universities in Chennai.

Chennai, formerly known as Madras, is the capital of Tamil Nadu and a major commercial, cultural and educational centre of South India.

Although known as a polluted and overpopulated city, Chennai’s lack of glitz and glamour make it one of the friendliest and most humble places to study in India – if you can get past the clogged streets and heat.

Chennai is proud of its heritage. The city is a centre for Carnatic music and hosts an annual music season, as well as being home to the Tamil film industry known as Kollywood.

Study in Chennai?

Chennai has many respected universities and institutions where you can study as an undergraduate, with engineering a particular speciality.

There are many different types of institution that can offer undergraduate degrees in India, so you should research your chosen place carefully before accepting.

Most undergraduate courses in India will take between 3-4 years to complete, but the sheer number and variety of institutions mean that this can vary.

Immigration and visas

Indian student visas are issued for the duration of your undergraduate course up to a maximum of five years. In order to qualify for a student visa, you will need to demonstrate the following:

  • You have a confirmed place on a course at a recognised education institution
  • You are not already in the country on a tourist or business visa
  • You have paid all relevant visa fees
You can apply for a student visa either at your national Indian embassy or online. Student visas are multiple entry but do not allow you to work while in India. Students with spouses will be able to apply for a spousal visa for their partner to join them.

Accommodation and living costs

Most universities in Chennai will offer you accommodation as an international student. This will normally be in the form of a single sex hostel with shared rooms. Although this might seem daunting at first, it is a great way to meet fellow students and settle into life in Chennai easily.

Some international students will look for the own apartment to live in. Good areas to rent in Chennai include Annanagar, Kipauk and Mylapore – ask your chosen university for more details.

Expect to pay around INR 9,000 for a one bedroom flat in the centre of Chennai.
