Mumbai is a vast megalopolis and one of the world’s most populous cities. It is India’s cultural capital, full of colour, vibrancy and noise and home to more than 20 million people spread across its seven islands.

Home to Bollywood, billionaires and bazaars, old school Bombay offers everything that is good about India. It is the country’s financial powerhouse, but also its chief tastemaker, with fashion, film and nightlife all huge industries.

However, this is also a place where billionaires live side by side with extreme poverty. More than half the population still live in slums and religious –based unrest and corruption still forms part of Mumbai’s underbelly.

Mumbai is one of India’s main centres of further education and is home to several high-class universities. You can study an undergraduate degree in Mumbai at the following institutions:

Undergraduate degrees in Mumbai generally take between 3-4 years to complete depending on the subject and mode of study you choose.

Immigration and visas

Indian student visas are issued for the duration of your undergraduate course in Mumbai up to a maximum of five years. In order to qualify for a student visa, you will need to demonstrate the following:
  • You have a confirmed place on a course at a recognised education institution
  • You are not already in the country on a tourist or business visa
  • You have paid all relevant visa fees
You can apply for a student visa either at your national Indian embassy or online. Student visas are multiple entry but do not allow you to work while in India. Students with spouses will be able to apply for a spousal visa for their partner to join them. 

Accommodation and living costs

Many universities in Mumbai provide international students with university accommodation. This is the best way of finding somewhere to stay in Mumbai at short notice and is also a great way to make friends with fellow students.

However, if you do decide to find your own accommodation, it’s worth noting that Mumbai is both one of the most expensive cities to rent in India.

Students should opt to live near their institution, but popular areas with students are Chembur, Byculla, Bandra, Andheri and Vile Parle.

Expect to pay around INR20,000 for a one bedroom flat in Mumbai centre.
