Undergraduate degrees in Japan generally take four years to complete, although this can vary depending on the institution, subject and mode of study.

Immigration and visas

Foreign students intending to study at university in Kyoto should obtain College Student Resident status, as well as a visa, which should be applied for directly from the Japanese embassy in their home country. 

Applicants will need the following:

  • The Application for Certificate of Eligibility
  • Two photographs
  • Letter of acceptance from university
It is advised that you apply for your Japanese visa within plenty of time in order than it can be sufficiently processed.

Accommodation and living costs

Most students in Kyoto opt to stay in university accommodation as it is cheaper, easier to find and a good way to meet other students. However, if you choose to go for private accommodation, you should probably think about which ward you want to live in.
Kyoto is divided into eleven wards, with the two most popular student wards being the central (Nakagyo-ku) and lower (Shimogyo-ku) wards.
