Why study at CMU's English Language Institute?
Not only does Central Michigan University (CMU) offer more than 170 academic programs and is the 46th largest public university in the United States, but also we have a reputation for being a large university with a friendly, small campus feel. Our faculty and staff truly care about students and ensure that they are provided with the guidance and assistance needed to be successful.

Students wanting to study English Only may apply directly into the English Language Institute (ELI).  For students who are accepted into CMU, but do not meet the English Proficiency requirement, a Bridge (for Undergraduate students) or a Conditional (for Graduate Students) Admission is available.

These special admissions place students in the ELI, where they learn language skills and strategies necessary for successful completion of academic classes and acclimation to university life in the United States.  While in the ELI, Bridge and Conditionally admitted students may be able to take academic courses concurrently with their ELI courses.

Our mission is to help students become independent, critical thinkers who make beneficial contributions to their academic, social, and global communities. If these are your goals, too, our friendly, flexible atmospheremake the ELI the best choice for you.

International Student Support
Visit our International website for information on CMU’s campus, academics, student involvement, applications, admissions, finances, and the surrounding community.  CMU’s Office of International Affairs (OIA) provides many services and activities that enhance interaction between students from the US and abroad.  The OIA works hard to ensure that international students and scholars experience an easy transition while at CMU.
CMU's English Language Institute (ELI) offers several programs to meet your specific needs. The ELI uses the Michigan State University English Language Test (MSUELT) to determine whether students place into the intensive Program, the Dual Program, or need no English instruction.

The ELI accepts TOEFL, IELTS, MELAB and PTE Academic test scores. English proficiency test scores must be submitted to CMU by the date of the ELI placement test. If students don't have a proficiency test score at that time, the ELI will use the MSUELT placement test score. The last day to drop and add classes is CMU's official drop/add deadline.
